There is no convenient install feature (I am not sure how to do that in scons). rlvm will work (without icons or localization) in place. If you wish to use rlvm in place, the binary is in: $ ./build/rlvm For packagers, the debian/install file contains a mapping of where files should be copied to. I agree that there should be a better long term solution, though it currently escapes me. ### COMPILING UNDER OSX In addition to freetype-config and sdl-config needing to be in your `$PATH`, (like when compiling under Linux), the Sconscripts assume you use fink to manage your unix programs and that fink is installed at /sw/, though they also try to check for Darwin Ports. You may need to edit the SConscript files if using something else. To build an OSX application, type: $ scons --release --fullstatic which will build rlvm.app in the build directory. The resulting OSX application will ask you for the location of the game with a native dialog. To build a dmg file for distribution, type: $ scons --release --fullstatic --dmgname="rlvm " ## KNOWN ISSUES Little Busters' baseball doesn't work because it is implemented as a Windows DLL instead. For the same reason, the dungeon crawling minigame in Tomoyo After does not work. ## GETTING INVOLVED Little Buster's baseball minigame appears to be implemented by a DLL, not RealLive bytecode. Instead, you have to store the name they enclose. NAME_MOD affects only how the name is displayed, and there are three cases: 0 - the name is displayed inline 1 - the name is displayed in a separate window 2 - the name is hidden An example of a game that uses case 2 is Planetarian, IIRC. Even in case 0, you cannot ignore the lenticular brackets, though, because they're critical to indentation. Indentation takes place automatically in two cases: after one of 「『( at the start of a line, OR after a name enclosed in lenticular brackets. In case 2, what happens is that the first character for display after the 】 is checked. If it's one of 「『(, it's printed; otherwise, an implicit wide space is printed. Then the indentation is set at the new offset position, then the remainder of the text is displayed as usual. Indentation is retained until either it's reset explicitly (e.g. with par(), or with pause() when #WINDOW.n.R_COMMAND_MOD is 1) or until the end of a page of text (page(), or pause() when R_COMMAND_MOD is 0). Two things that _don't_ appear to reset indentation are closing quotes of any sort, or the end of a _screen_ of text. Instead, if text runs past the end of a screen, an implicit pause is inserted. When the player clicks to proceed, the screen is cleared - and, if NAME_MOD is 0, the name is printed again, followed by a wide space, followed by the continuation of the text. (This won't necessarily be indented the same as it was on the previous screen... see pathological case below!) Finally, the "current name" variable, which is set by enclosing a name in lenticular brackets, is used for a number of other things: one example I know of is per-character text colouring (I believe ALMA uses this feature). As if all that wasn't complicated enough, the parsing of text within lenticular brackets also has a few complications. For example, it's one of the places where the ###PRINT() syntax for variable interpolation is recognised (instead of using strout and intout as elsewhere). :) For an interesting pathological case, consider the following code: '\{Foo}「Indents\nnest.\{Bar}『Yes,\nreally.』」 Set your window \ up so that this text runs off the screen... then guess how far it \ will be indented!' Yep, RealLive is seriously bizarre. Since it was very relevant to what I was doing with RealLive, I have fairly extensive notes on the way RealLive line-wrapping and indentation work. The value 999 is special: it sets the defaults for any objects not specifically mentioned in an #OBJECT directive. I know what a few of them do: * SpaceKey determines whether an object is considered part of the UI layer or not; if it's non-zero, then the object is hidden temporarily if the player hides the text window to view the picture properly (typically by pressing the space key). * ObjOnOff determines whether an object can be toggled on and off independently by the player. Valid values are 0, 1, and 2. Values of 1 and 2 correspond to [Set]ShowObject1() and [Set]ShowObject2(), and to #SYSCOMs 18 and 19 respectively. * WeatherOnOff determines whether the object is considered a weather effect object or not; if it's non-zero, the object will be shown and hidden with [Set]ShowWeather(), #SYSCOM 17. Default visibility of ObjOnOff and WeatherOnOff are configured with #INIT_OBJECT1_ONOFF_MOD, #INIT_OBJECT2_ONOFF_MOD, and #INIT_WEATHER_ONOFF_MOD, where values of 0 mean that the objects are visible by default, and values of 1 mean they are invisible. For dithered fades, interpolation N adds N intermediate steps so that the transition fades between patterns rather than stepping between them. For wipes, interpolation N replaces the hard boundary with a soft edge of thickness roughly 2^N * 2.5 pixels. xsize, ysize For pattern-based transitions, sets the size of the pattern. For example, a dithered fade with xsize and ysize both set to 0 uses pixel-level dithering; setting xsize to 2 and ysize to 3, each pixel in the dither will be replaced by a 2x3 pixel block. For strip-based transitions (30, 31, etc), I believe xsize sets the width of the strip (regardless of whether rows or columns are being used). opacity 0-255, the opacity of the new image. The way this works is that the new image is composited onto the old image in DC1 with this opacity, and then DC1 is copied to DC0 with the given transition. The remaining parameters (a, b, c) are mysteries. They probably only affect certain specific transition styles, and I don't know which or how. Two further notes: Firstly, the parameters in the long form of grp/recMulti() are identical to these. The names in the 1.40 manual are wrong. (They're fixed in SVN; if you aren't already, you should be using the up-to-date manual at http://svn.haeleth.net/doc/manual.shtml, which is regenerated automatically whenever I change anything...) Secondly, not all parameters apply to all transition styles (e.g. direction has no effect on plain fades; interpolation has no effect on pans).
